Girl, Stop Hustling

Do you catch yourself wrestling with loud voices telling you how to hustle, hustle and hustle harder? Are pushing yourself harder only to feel more overwhelmed?

Did you start the year striving to be the best version of you that anyone’s seen yet, only to feel burned out by day 17?

I’ve been there. I’ve done the rise and grind. And I’ve found that hustling is an exhausting and unfulfilling way to live.

Years ago, I bought in to hustle culture. I was always on. I didn’t take breaks and always took on more and more work. I was always out to prove myself and my value to the world. Eventually all this hustling knocked me off my feet and into a hospital bed.

Here’s what I learned:

If you want to take care of your body, exercise and eat well, but don’t forget to rest. I have to remind myself of this crucial step when I want to get up to write in the middle of the night.

If you want to improve your mindset, read the Bible. It’s the best self-help book ever written. And it doesn’t tell us to hustle, grind or rely on ourselves at all. It tells us to rest in Jesus and learn from him.

Your success does not depend on your ability to hustle. It never has. Sure, you should work diligently. But don’t strive just to feel good about yourself and keep up with the influencers you follow on Instagram. Don’t let your fear of failure and the fear of what people think of you control your life.

Seek God and his purpose for your life. No matter what your career or calling, God has a purpose for you there. And the failure that you’re so afraid of can turn into something better than you ever imagined. God is so much bigger than us and our goals.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 (NIV)

Once I got my hustle in check and let God take the lead, I had more peace, and more success, than I ever anticipated.

So if you’re burning out on hustle culture, come seek rest in Jesus who says,

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
