Vivid Sunsets and Life’s Storms

Did you know that the colors of a sunset are more vivid after a storm clears the air?

There’s some interesting science behind it, but I’m drawn to the deeper significance of a brilliant sunset.

This week a dramatic storm blew through our Florida community, catching us all off guard. (It’s not hurricane season after all.) But as the news showed us stories of other towns that fared far worse than we did, I felt gratitude for God’s protection.

As the sun set the following day, the sky lit up with the most vivid colors I’ve seen in a long time. As I ran outside to take in the sight, my soul was filled with joy. I felt reverence for our awesome God who promises to bring good out of life’s storms and beauty from the darkness.

Life’s storms are full of chaos and anxiety in the middle but once we get to the other side, life is more vivid. We can look back and see how God was there in the details. We see where he carried us. We have a deeper appreciation for the beauty, the glimpses of heaven we get, in the everyday things like sunsets.

I pray that we never lose our sense of wonder. I pray that we’re not too distracted to appreciate the beauty around us. I pray that these sunsets always stop us in our tracks and leave us in awe. Most of all, I pray that we see God and his faithfulness in them.

“The Mighty One, God, the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to where it sets. From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth.” Psalm 50:1-2

  1. This is a beautiful blog post that speaks to me in so many ways!

I was trying to subliminally talk my son out of going to the Florida State Fair yesterday as the kids get the day off of school and I was afraid there would be chaos!

We got there around 3 pm and my son rode rides and I patiently waited while keeping an eye out for riff-raff. By the time we had finished dinner inside a BBQ barn the sun was setting. It was about 6 pm and as I walked out of the barn I couldn’t help but be captivated by the beautiful sky!

All I could think about after that was if I never brought my son to the fair, not only would I not have this wonderful Mother-Son time with my middle-schooler (very hard to get), but I would’ve totally missed out on seeing this beautiful sky! I’m not a native Floridian and I do miss seeing formed clouds like we had in Hawaii and on the West Coast. I learned from this post that we get those skies after a storm so, I’ll definitely be on the lookout. It’s rare to see the clouds look so beautiful here in Tampa Bay.

God is so good to bring us such beauty after a storm! Thank you for this beautiful and insightful post.
