Adventure-Seeking Mom Alisha dos Santos and daughter pose with Great Stirrup Cay sign and Norwegian Getaway cruise ship in The Bahamas

When I’m not adventuring around Florida, I’m often writing about cruise travel or sailing on a cruise ship with my husband, teen, and tween. I draw on my experiences sailing with various lines as a full-time cruise travel writer for TravelHost.

I took my first cruise 20 years ago, shortly after moving to Florida as a college student and quickly learned that cruising was one of the most convenient and affordable ways to explore the Caribbean. My husband and I enjoyed cruising with Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line during the early years of our marriage, discovering unique Caribbean destinations like the untouched paradise of Samaná in the Dominican Republic.

After the pandemic, we introduced our two kids to cruising, first with short cruises to The Bahamas from Port Canaveral and South Florida, and then longer sailings. We fell in love with the magic of Disney cruises — even though our family isn’t fanatical about Disney — and later learned that Margaritaville at Sea is a fun, laid-back option that truly gets multigenerational families in an island state of mind.

In 2025, we took our family cruise adventures to a new region, touring the Mediterranean on an 11-day voyage from Barcelona to Trieste, Italy with Norwegian. Then in summer 2026, we experienced Alaska’s wild beauty on a wonder-inspiring journey with Holland America Line.

Below I’ve compiled some of my best cruise tips and reviews to help families — whether you’re planning your first cruise or considering a different line or region for your next vacation.
