More Than a Mom Book Review

Motherhood is an amazing adventure and an incredible gift. Recognizing that, is it ok for a mom to desire to be anything more than a mom?

What if being more than a mom made your family stronger? What if taking care of your own soul, mind and body were the first steps to helping your family thrive?

In her new book More Than A Mom, bestselling author Kari Kampakis makes a strong case for prioritizing your own wellness as a mom. Moms are natural givers, but we’re often so busy giving to everyone else that we put caring for our own health and wellness on the back burner.

In More Than A Mom, Kari Kampakis encourages us to consider how the way we care for ourselves sets an example for our kids. If our kids see us neglecting our own wellness, they may grow up and do the same. Taking care of ourselves makes us stronger and our kids’ strength builds on our strength.

“The world shaping your children is more callous and complex than the world that shaped you. Kids need to be stronger, smarter and more rooted in what’s real. Empower your son or daughter by tending to your heart, soul, body and mind. Give them a vision of a healthy adult – and know that as they launch into the real world, they will build on what you started.”

With this in mind, More Than a Mom is a guide to inner wellness centered around 10 practical life habits to incorporate to help you grow stronger as a mom, woman and role model. Using Scripture and real-world examples from all seasons of motherhood, More Than A Mom will empower you to prioritize self-development and practice self-compassion.

Don’t Lose Yourself in the Journey of Motherhood

“Even if your children are your greatest game-changer, you are more than just their mom.”

Activities like paddleboarding help me remember I'm More Than a Mom

Early in my motherhood adventure, I was inspired to start this blog by a peaceful moment alone on my paddleboard that reminded me who I was as a woman, beyond a wife and mom. As I took some time for me on my paddleboard, I remembered that I’m a person who feels most at peace on the water and most alive when she’s seeking adventure.

One of my hopes as a blogger is that the words I write will help moms know that they are not alone in their yearnings to thrive as an individual, in addition to as a mom.

Similarly, More Than A Mom reminds moms of their own needs for love, compassion, rest and renewal. It walks you through 10 actionable ways to mother yourself that will strengthen you and your mothering.

Prioritize Your Wellness, Help Your Family Thrive

“Believe it or not, some of your best parenting will come through the example you set and the determination you model as you learn to value yourself and your life.”

In More Than A Mom, one of the 10 life habits presented is to make peace with your body. As someone who was a very self-critical teen, this chapter was very relatable and empowering for me.

As a mom, it’s very important to me to set a good example for my kids when it comes to taking care of and loving my body. I want my kids to see me exercise, practice self-care and make healthy choices, but I don’t want to model an unhealthy focus on body image. I’m careful not to make negative comments about my body or model a preoccupation with weight and beauty. I want my kids to see a mom who is comfortable in her skin, not one who obsesses about her appearance.

To help with this, More Than A Mom’s “Make Peace with Your Body” chapter provides eight mindset tips to inspire better body love.
